Wilderness at the Smokies is the perfect vacation destination to visit with family and friends. As you plan your spring and summer travels, you should definitely include this unique resort with indoor and outdoor water park plus so much more!
When we began thinking about our Spring Break plans last fall, I had a few things in mind.
- I wanted a vacation spot close to our home in middle Tennessee.
- I was looking for a place my kids could experience a little adventure; definitely something new.
- I hoped to go somewhere we could invite friends to come along.
I’ve wanted to visit Wilderness at the Smokies for years, ever since I learned about this unique family resort. It sounded like the perfect destination to accomplish all of my spring break family trip goals.
We headed to Sevierville, TN last month for 4 days and 3 nights of fun with dear friends. The kids counted down for weeks until they could gather with their buddies for this special trip. As soon as we arrived at the resort (in the afternoon), the kids changed into their swimsuits to enjoy Salamander Springs, a small outdoor water area (perfect for little ones) just outside the lodge we were staying in – Stone Hill Lodge. Salamander Springs was great for giving the kids a little taste of all Wilderness at the Smokies has to offer. We spent a few hours enjoying the water features and trying out the small water slides (in preparation for the big ones awaiting us in Wild Water Dome).
Note: the other outdoor water park area, Lake Wilderness, was not yet open so we weren’t able to experience it. But it looked awesome! According to their website, Lake Wilderness will reopen on May 26th with three all new features! Also noted on the website, Salamander Springs is only open on weekends until May 26th.
What Does Wilderness at the Smokies Have to Offer Families?
- 2 Lodges plus separate villas for more spacious accommodations.
- 2 restaurants on site where kids eat free for breakfast and dinner.
- Wild Water Dome indoor water park plus two outdoor water park facilities.
- Adventure Forest, an indoor play place with arcade games, ropes course, mini golf, bowling, rock wall and more!
- Most rooms include double beds plus a pull out couch so families with 2+ kiddos have plenty of space.
We spent an entire day in Wild Water Dome enjoying the wave pool (my 5 year old son’s favorite) and working our way up to the huge water slides (it took me a while to get my courage). One of the benefits of traveling with friends is having others around to push you to try new things. I probably would have skipped the slides if my bestie didn’t encourage me to go for it.
We enjoyed two evenings in Adventure Forest where our kids surprised us with their bravery. My boy conquered two levels on the ropes course and my girl found her courage as she climbed the rock wall. We played mini golf, we bowled and won hundreds of tickets at the arcade games. The kids loved the variety of activities available right there on our resort property.
There is something for every member of the family at Wilderness at the Smokies!
We’ve thought about and prayed for the Great Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee a lot since devastating wildfires swept through the region last year. We were happy to find the area alive and well! There are some places still recovering from the horrible tragedy but the area designated for family travel is ready and waiting for you and your friends to make wonderful memories there.

Have you visited Wilderness at the Smokies? What are your favorite features of the resort?
Most of the areas of Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, TN are doing well after devastating wildfires swept through the region last fall. But the area my husband and I visited for our honeymoon in the Smoky Mountains almost 15 years ago, was greatly affected by the tragedy. When we followed the news coverage of the fires last year, Dave came across a photo on USA Today that looked like our honeymoon cabin. We went back last month and confirmed our cabin was, in fact, destroyed by the fires. It was such a sad image of the loss that the community has experienced. We are thankful for the wonderful memories we had there and will continue to pray for healing and restoration in the Great Smoky Mountains. Will you join us in praying?
I was given a free night and special media rate at the resort in exchange for my review but all opinions are my own.
