I love the idea of making a DAY out of holidays. I also love SIMPLE. Here are a few simple suggestions for making Valentines Day fun for your kids all day long.
Rise and Shine, Buttercup // Imagine your kids waking up to a cute heart-shaped bunting draped over their bedhead, window frame, or door. Fun, right? Felt (or construction paper) and mini clothespins for the win!
Breakfast // Do you have a heart-shaped cookie cutter? Why not power up for the day with something as fun as it is yum? This adorable heart-inspired breakfast is sure to get a few squeals of delight (though I’d have to scramble that egg for my littles).
Ready for School // Although this idea wouldn’t fly well for my boys, your daughter might love a special heart day hair-do.
In the Backpack // I did a version of this giant card for the kids’ grandma once, but imagine your twelve-year-old son getting to school only to discover the day’s biggest {most embarrassing} card is from his mom. I’M IN. {Totally doing this in about seven years’ time. Heh.} This sending a hug idea is adorable when kids do it, but how about when mom does it instead? Hokey and super fun. Well. . . memorable at least. Nothing wrong with showing your kids some Big Love.
In the Lunch Box // Surprise! Eating your veggies never looked so good. Make standard lunch fair into a special treat with a few extra shaves of the peeler to create these heart-shaped carrots slices. Seriously cute. A little touch that reminds them again: mom’s thinking of you.
After School Snack // Anything that combines apples and peanut butter is a win for me—I mean, the kids. These simple love apple sandwiches would make for a brilliant after school snack. (Repeat after me: cookie cutters are a simple food crafter’s best friend.) I actually make a version of this all the time, but using raisins instead of chocolate chips. The swap out for chocolate would give me mom of the year for at least the day.
Dinner // We are a pizza family. I love the idea of swapping out regular old pepperoni for heart-shaped pepperoni pizza because, again, it’s simple and just a little twist of fun on an old standby that the entire family looooooves. {I think I need to find a mini heart cookie cutter—you too?}
Bedtime // No matter what your kids’ ages are, I bet they’d put up with a little mushy mom sentimentality at bedtime in honor of the Love Day. Why not pull out an old {or current} favorite such as Guess How Much I Love You and read it to your kids before you tuck them in?
Happy Love Day, y’all. What do you plan on doing to make it fun for your kids this year?
