Our kiddos have been back-to-school for a few weeks now. You may still be enjoying carefree summer days in your area but before you know it, the time will come for you to begin a new year, too. We’ve been preparing for a month to get our children ready to head out into the world and whether, like us, you send yours off to learn in public/private school or if you teach them in the comfort of your own home, I’m sure you share our hope to have them start each school year standing on a firm on the foundation of God’s truth.
My girl started third grade this year. The difference in her pictures of her first day last year to her first day last week are like night and day. She was a baby before but now she’s on the fast track to tweendom.
There’s a stereotype about the childhood middle years that causes us to expect our girls to fumble through age 8-12 with insecurity and awkwardness. But while they may walk through this season of life a little clumsy, our daughters can stand strong and beautiful upon the truth of who they are according to God’s Word, if we point them to it.
As she’s grown in maturity and relationships this past year, Hope has also grown to love the For Girls Like You ministry after she started reading the devotional and received a magazine subscription for Christmas. Though she was on the young side {only seven} when she discovered this connection, she’s growing with it by her side. For Girls Like You founder, Wynter Pitts {whom I had the privilege of spending time with at a conference last fall}, is a mom to girls herself and understands the need to fill our daughters with truth in order to arm them for life out in a great big world that wants to feed them lies about who they are and what they are worth.
Wynter recently released, You’re God’s Girl: A Devotional for Tweens as a follow up to the popular, For Girls Like You devotional. Hope was thrilled to get a copy in the mail a few weeks ago and we will be reading through it this year as she continues to grow in her relationship with Jesus and her understanding of who he’s created her to be.
I’ve been asked by several of my mom friends if this devotional is appropriate for their girls. If your girl is age 8+ it is an absolutely perfect resource for her to connect with God and grow in understanding of his love and plan for her life. If your daughter is on the younger side {age 6-8}, this book is a wonderful tool you can use with her to begin her journey of learning about her identity and place in God’s story.
I’m highlighting 8 of the devotions in You’re God’s Girl below to give you a glimpse of what a wonderful back-to-school tool this book can be. Each one answers a hard question that may be plaguing the heart of your daughter, even if she doesn’t realize it. I’m not going to share the actual devo title or even much of it’s content {you’ll have to go grab the book for all that}. This God’s Girl Guide to a Great School Year simply shares the truth takeaways I want to discuss with my daughter from many of the powerful devotions in the book.
The God’s Girl Guide to a Great School Year
- Be Brave. {Esther} Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone.
- Be a Light. {Matthew 5:14} You were made to shine bright in the midst of a dark world.
- Please God, Not Others. {Luke 6:31} Commit to be who God made you to be, not who others want you to be.
- Ask for Wisdom. {Proverbs 2:6} Seek God to help you make good choices.
- Believe what God Says about You. {2 Corinthians 5:17} The Bible is full of truth about who and whose you are. {I LOVE the scriptures and identity statements in this devo!}
- Love Well. {1 Corinthians 13:4-8} Friendship is a gift to treasure and take care of.
- Focus Your Mind on Good Things. {Philippians 4:8} Point your thoughts toward God and his love.
- Be You! {Romans 12:2} It’s OK to stand out and be different, especially if your uniqueness reflects God.
More than the perfect outfit, cutest backpack or comfortable new tennis shoes, our girls need to head back-to-school with their identity dressed in the Word of God and their heart full of his love for them. I promise you, You’re God’s Girl will be the best school supply you buy for your daughter this year!
And if you have a crafty/creative girl {like me}, check out the companion coloring book! How cute is this?!?!
