Heroes of the Bible

25 Jan

heroes of the bible

Teach kids the superpowers of our faith heroes with these 4 simple lessons. Noah, Joshua, David and Nehemiah are just a few of the many mighty men of God we can learn from and follow. Talk about each hero then put his super power to work in your home, school and community!

How to use the 5 & Thrive Bible study method to learn about Heroes of the Bible:

  1. Prepare Your Heart: what hero do we want to talk about?
  2. Learn from the Word: where is his story found? what is his key verse?
  3. Ask Questions: why is he important?
  4. Name the Truth: what’s his superpower? what can we learn from him?
  5. Take Action: what’s our superhero move? how can we use his superpower in our life?

 Heroes of the Bible

Hero:

Noah

Read the story of Noah in a children’s Bible or Genesis 6-9.

Everyone probably thought Noah was crazy! He was building the biggest boat ever and there wasn’t a drop of rain in sight. But Noah obeyed God’s instructions because he trusted him. God provided everything Noah needed to keep his family and all the animals safe. I bet Noah was glad he obeyed God and was safe inside that giant boat when the flood started to come.

Power Verse:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways obey him, and he will show you the way. Proverbs 3:5-6 (adapted)

Power Questions:

  1. Why should we trust God even when we don’t understand?
  2. What do you need to trust God for right now?

Superpower:

Trust

Power Move:

I trust God because he provides everything I need.

Hero:

Joshua

Read the story of Joshua in a children’s Bible or Joshua 1.

After Moses died, God needed a new leader for his people. Joshua must have been really scared, knowing what a big job God was asking him to do. But he stepped up with strength and courage, trusting God would always be there to help him.

Power Verse:

Remember that I command you to be strong and brave. So don’t be afraid. The Lord your God will be with you everywhere you go. Joshua 1:9 (ICB)

Power Questions:

  1. Why can we be strong and brave instead of afraid?
  2. How do you need to have courage right now?

Superpower:

Courage

Power Move:

I have courage because God is always with me.

Hero:

David

Read the story of David and Goliath in a children’s Bible or 1 Samuel 17.

David was called “a man after God’s own heart.” He was small (compared to his brothers) but he had a big heart for God. He served and worshiped God with everything he had. Even when he fought the giant Goliath, he won declaring the mighty power of God, first!

Power Verse:

I will praise you every day. I will praise you forever and ever. The Lord is great. He is worthy of our praise. Psalm 145:2-3 (ICB)

Power Questions:

  1. What does it mean to worship God?
  2. What are some ways we can worship God with our lives?

Superpower:

Worship

Power Move:

I put God above everything because he deserves first place in my life.

Hero:

Nehemiah

Read the story of Nehemiah in a children’s Bible or Nehemiah chapters 1, 2 + 6.

Nehemiah was sad that the wall of Jerusalem had been destroyed. He asked the King if he could go and rebuild it. Nehemiah had a really hard time completing this big job. Lots of people tried to make it hard for him. But Nehemiah didn’t give up. He finished the wall with God’s help!

Power Verse:

Stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58 (adapted)

Power Questions:

  1. Why is it important to finish what we started?
  2. What is something hard you need God’s help with?

Superpower:

Commitment

Power Move:

I am committed because I can finish anything with God’s help.
