No one really understands “motherhood tiredness” until they’re a mother. It’s as if being this tired is a right of passage. Sure, you hear the jokes and stories, but believe me: it’s a special kind of tired that only a mother knows. Even as I write this, I’m beyond exhausted! I honestly can’t even keep the days straight anymore. It’s finals week and I have yet to study for a single test. I’m running on 4 hours of sleep a night {if I’m lucky}, I haven’t washed my hair in 3 days, my leg hair is just shy of becoming a forest, and you can totally forget about laundry!
I’m the mom who has always taken pride in her appearance. I’ve kept up quite nicely with the house work as well as my school work. I spent the right amount of time with my kids and my husband. I’m the mom that other people refer to as “supermom”. So why am I so drained?
God recently whispered to me, “You’re not spending time with Me. You spend all of your time worrying about your earthly life that you have begun to neglect ME. I’m your whisper of peace, your problem solver, your stress reliever. But when you try to do it all without me I can’t be these things because you’re too busy trying to be them for yourself.”
Somewhere in between those feedings, sticky kisses, math problems, date nights, and house work, I started neglecting my relationship with God. I didn’t do it purposefully; I slowly lost track of time When we neglect our spiritual life, we are not allowing God to take control or be that whisper of peace.
If you’re suffering from mom exhaustion, I encourage you to seek out the Lord and allow him to take the extra baggage that we often carry unnecessarily. Take solace in His presence and his capability to help you through those days when your body has developed a tolerance to coffee and Red Bull and you’re wondering how you are still able to function.
Try these simple pick me ups for exhausted moms. They don’t cost money and they won’t take a lot of time, but I promise you’ll feel better.
- Stop what you are doing and breathe deep. Inhale the grace of a loving God.
- Read a Bible verse out loud. Consider keeping a list on hand of verses that speak life to weary souls.
- Sing or hum a worship song to lift your spirit and connect you to God.
The Bible says,
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
The promise is clear. We simply have to stop long enough to receive what he has to offer.
P.S. Since writing this I have washed my hair and shaved my legs! Oh, and I passed my finals! Thank you Jesus!
Are you overcome by mom exhaustion? Do you need a little pick me up this week? What simple thing can you do right now to connect your heart with God’s whisper of peace?
