For better or worse, I typically mother by conversation. I will likely be that mom whose kids roll their eyes when she starts going on and on about this or that. Because I love to talk things out. I may be less than intentional about my kids’ healthy eating and screen time but I am nothing if I can’t talk and share and give them space to pour their hearts out to me.
I’ve said it before. . .my favorite time of day with my daughter is when we are snuggled up in her bed at night, reading and chatting about the day. Some nights we have incredible conversations about life and even heaven. And some nights she’s more interested in what we are going to do the next day than sharing heart to heart with mommy {she’s only 5 after all}. As young as my kiddos are, I still try to have meaningful conversations with them because 1) you never know what will come out of their heads and hearts and 2) I am establishing a culture of communication and trust with them.

We’re talking all week about how to love our kids like Jesus. We shared about representing the character of Jesus to our children and Kristy shared a wonderfully helpful post on how to become slow to anger. {Oh how we all need help in that area.} Because my passion is conversation with kids, today I am sharing the questions we should ask our children every day. No matter how old they are, these questions are foundational in knowing and understanding what is going on in their lives.
4 Questions to Ask Your Kids Every Day
1. What did you learn today?
It is helpful as a parent, to understand what information our kids are truly connecting with in their education. Most kids won’t run the gamut of all they learned but hopefully {and with time} they will choose the highlights or those things that resonated most with them. And maybe, just maybe they might, from time to time, share something they learned outside of their formal education which could naturally lead to conversation about a life lesson.
2. Who did you spend time with today? {or play with or hang out with depending on your child’s age}
We always need to know who our kids are spending time with. This helps us understand if our children are connecting to others and with whom they are investing time and emotional energy.
3. Who did you serve or help today?
Whether they have an answer or not, the question itself is a reminder to them that they should always be looking for someone to serve. When they do share and we affirm their actions, it further reinforces a servant’s heart in our children.
4. What was your favorite and your toughest part of the day? {hi’s and lows as some call them}
We need to celebrate their joys and cover their sorrows. This is such a beautiful practice for families to engage in together. Many families do this around the dinner table, which I love!
Jesus was God made flesh, a man who lived among us so he could know us and understand us. Spending time talking with our kids and understanding their days is a powerful and effective way to love them like Jesus.
